Magic Kingdom has taken the next step. The Frontierland boardwalk, the riverside path linking Liberty Square to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, is now almost completely demolished according to recent photos. Per WDW News Today, all that remains behind the walls is one short stretch of the original walkway near the former Westward Ho kiosk, along with a few wooden birdhouses and scattered foliage.

How the past few months unfolded

The demolition is no surprise. It is the end point of a process that ran through the summer. In early July, roughly half the walkway closed for the work. In early August, the Westward Ho kiosk closed and was fully torn down. In early September, the boardwalk closed to guests entirely. It has been hidden behind construction walls since, and is now largely gone in a structural sense too.

Disney has not commented on this stage of demolition, which is typical for work taking place inside existing construction walls.

What is going in here

The cause is construction of Piston Peak National Park, the Cars-themed land rising in the north-western corner of Magic Kingdom. Two attractions are confirmed: Cars Ridge Run Rally, an off-road race over the summit of Piston Peak and through a geyser field, and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, built around a school-bus-sized animatronic. Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island are also making way for the land.

Will the walkway come back?

It looks that way. Official Piston Peak concept art still shows a path along the water, which points to a reworked version of the boardwalk returning. Disney has not given a date for that, nor an opening date for the land itself.
