Halloween Rolls Across Asia: Tokyo From September 16, Hong Kong From September 18, Shanghai From October 4

Halloween arrives in Asia on a staggered schedule this year. All three resorts have confirmed their programmes, and the dates fall close together.

Tokyo Disney Resort: September 16 to October 31

At Tokyo Disneyland, the villains parade "The Villains' Halloween 'Into the Frenzy'" returns – once daily, roughly 45 minutes, six floats. Cruella de Vil, Ursula, Jafar and Maleficent appear alongside Mickey and friends, with flame and smoke effects.

At Tokyo DisneySea, the "Halloween Harbor Greeting" runs twice daily in Mediterranean Harbor, with characters in Halloween costumes aboard a decorated boat.

"Lazos de la Familia" at Lost River Delta, the resort's Día de los Muertos celebration, has been expanded and runs slightly longer, from September 15 to November 2, with marigold decor and mariachi performances. Miguel appears in two versions – regular outfit and skeleton.

Important for travellers: costumes are permitted only in two windows, September 15–30 and October 16–31, under strict rules – only characters listed on the official page are admitted. There are no changing facilities inside the parks, though paid facilities are available at Ikspiari. Seasonal food and merchandise begin September 15, including maple pumpkin churros.

Hong Kong Disneyland: September 18 to November 1

Hong Kong puts the villains front and centre. "Uninvited! A Villains Takeover Party" has ten Disney Villains and their henchmen, led by Maleficent, take over Main Street. In Adventureland, "Let's Get Wicked" features Ursula, Cruella de Vil, Dr. Facilier, Gaston and Maleficent performing their signature numbers.

Disney Premier Access can be added for both shows from HK$99.

On the dining side, "Jack Skellington's The Nightmare Before Dinner" at the River View Cafe stands out – a themed set menu at HK$498–598 including a character encounter. Limited-time offerings include a glowing "blood bag" drink and Maleficent-inspired grape soft serve, plus in-room Halloween party packs at the resort hotels.

Shanghai Disney Resort: October 4 to November 1

Shanghai starts latest and expands most. The party format grows to ten "Spook-tacular Days" – October 16–18, 23–25 and 29–31, plus November 1 – with five themed zones, mazes and the "Disney Villains Castle Celebration".

New by day is the "Donald's Halloween Treat Cavalcade" parade. Also new: Peg-Leg Pete as an evil king, Mickey and friends in steampunk styling, and Duffy and friends as a bard troupe. A Zootopia "Howl-o-ween" celebration with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde rounds it out.

Ahead of Halloween, Shanghai is running Duffy Month through all of September, marking the tenth anniversary of the character line and debuting the first Duffy and Friends animated short, made with the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. September 23–29 adds LinaBell's fifth birthday celebration.

What this means for European visitors

The staggered timing is convenient: an October trip catches the full season at all three resorts. Anyone limited to the second half of September should pick Tokyo or Hong Kong – Shanghai is still in Duffy Month at that point, with Halloween yet to start.

Note also Tokyo's costume rule: the window from October 1 to 15 falls outside the permitted period.
