Distances matter here. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is roughly 25 miles from Walt Disney World and about 10 miles from Universal. Deciding on your hotel early makes it much easier to match your flight and your transfer.
When an Alternative Airport Makes Sense
Orlando Sanford (SFB) is served mainly by U.S. low-cost carriers and can work well on a domestic connection, but it adds considerable driving time to the parks. Tampa (TPA) is about 90 minutes west by car and is worth a look if you are renting a car anyway or pairing your visit with the Gulf Coast. Miami (MIA) suits road-trippers: Brightline gets you to Orlando airport in around three and a half hours.
The big advantage of flying nonstop: you land, clear immigration, collect your bags and you are done. No second check-in, no tight connection, no risk of missing your onward flight. For families or short trips, that peace of mind is often worth paying a little more.
Getting to Frankfurt
Frankfurt Airport has its own long-distance rail station, making it easy to reach from much of Germany. Rail&Fly or Lufthansa Express Rail tickets can often be added to your booking. Build in plenty of buffer time and aim for an earlier train rather than a later one.
If your connection is in the U.S., you enter the country at your first U.S. airport – not in Orlando. That means immigration, collecting your checked bags, clearing customs, re-checking the luggage and going through security again. Two hours is the bare minimum for this; two and a half to three hours is far more relaxed. The upside: you arrive in Orlando as a domestic passenger and walk straight out.
Connecting in Europe
With a connection in London, Amsterdam or Reykjavík, you only clear U.S. immigration once you reach Orlando. Always book the whole journey on a single ticket so the airline is responsible if you miss a connection and your bags are checked through to Orlando.
The Ideal Arrival Time
Nonstop flights from Frankfurt usually land in the late afternoon local time. That works perfectly: check in, grab dinner and head to bed early. With a six-hour time difference to Central Europe, you will naturally wake up early the next morning – ideal for being at the gates when the parks open. Skip buying a park ticket for arrival day.
Apply only through the official website or app of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Many third-party sites look official but charge several times the actual fee. Submit your application at least 72 hours before departure – ideally right after booking your flight.
Passport and Paperwork
You need an electronic passport with a chip. Temporary passports and German children’s passports are not accepted for visa-free travel. Keep your hotel booking and return flight details handy, either printed or saved offline on your phone. Remember: ESTA only authorizes you to travel to the U.S. border – the officer on arrival makes the final decision on entry.
Speeding Up Immigration
CBP’s free Mobile Passport Control app can shorten wait times at participating airports, including Orlando. There is no guarantee, but when lines are long, it is well worth trying.
Mears Connect: The Disney Resort Shuttle
Mears Connect is now the main shuttle service between the airport and the Disney resort hotels and is widely seen as the successor to Magical Express. There is a cheaper shared Standard service with several hotel stops and a pricier Express option with less waiting. It runs 24/7, so even a badly delayed flight will not leave you stranded. Expect one to almost two hours to your hotel depending on the route. Prices went up in 2026 and a fuel surcharge now applies, so check current rates on the Mears Connect website.
Uber and Lyft
For couples and small groups, rideshare is often the fastest option – and not necessarily the most expensive. Pickup zones at MCO are clearly signposted, and a ride to a Disney hotel takes around half an hour without traffic. Prices can surge at busy times, and you will need proper car seats for young children.
Rental Car
A rental car pays off if you are staying off-site, visiting several resorts, or planning day trips to the coast, Kennedy Space Center or Tampa. The Orlando area has many toll roads, and more and more of them are cashless. Ask how tolls are billed when you pick up the car and add the rental company’s toll package if needed. Do not forget to budget for parking at the parks and hotels.
Private Transfers and Hotel Shuttles
For families with lots of luggage or groups of five or more, a pre-booked private transfer can cost surprisingly little more than the shared shuttle. Some hotels along International Drive and around Universal also run their own shuttles, so check your hotel’s details.
